Heritage Walk 2016

Heritage walk was organized on  Sunday 03-01-2016  under the joint auspicious  of RPD College of Arts and Commerce and  Inner Wheel Club of Belgaum at Belgaum Fort premises. Dr.S.P.Surebankar ,Principal RPD College Belagavi with SwamiTadyuktananda of Shri Ramkrishna Mission Ashram Belagavi and  President of Inner Wheel Club Of Belagavi Smt Sunita.Hanumshet  inaugurated the Heritage Walk  at 9.00am..

Earlier the Principal Dr(smt)S.P.Surebankar briefed the gathered regarding the rich heritage  and history of Belgaum city. Belgaum’ is one of the oldest city among the cities of Karnataka state. Belgaum city is referred to as ‘Venugram’ (Bamboo village) in the inscriptions of 12th and 13th centuries. Belgaum might have been called ‘Bidira Male’ in Kannada language, which means a place having a group of bamboo groves. Belgaum city was ruled by many rulers viz – Satavahanas, Chlukyas, Rashtrakutas, Kadambas, Delhi sultans, Vijayanagar kings, Bijapur sultans, Mughals, Marathas, Peshwas and Britishers. Belgaum Fort was built by Adil Shahi governor Asad Khan  in the year 1519. “Shahapur” originally known as Shahapet was built by Sherkhan as the market for Belgaum Fort.

Swami  Tadyuktananda  briefed the importance of Heritage monument in and around Belgaum city and  district with special reference to the heritage home where Swami Vivekananda stayed in 1892. He also highlighted significance  of Western Ghats  and  rich heritage sites of Karnataka like Hampi  and Pattadkal.

The walk  started from  Kamal Basadi and terminated at Shri Ramkrishn Mission Ashram after taking complete round of entire Fort en-route Saphia Masjid ,Shiva temple, Mahar Regimental Training Centre, Durga Temple  etc. RPD student organizations like NCC Cadets, NSS Volunteers, Members of YRC and Scout and Guide,President and members of Inner Wheel Club of Belgaum took active part in the walk. The students displayed informative  play cards pertaining to the  importance of preservation of Heritage monuments through  out the rally.

Shri. Shrinath Deshpande Member SKE Society in association with Inner Wheel Club  hosted the participants for a breakfast at his resident located in Fort premises.

Principal, faculty members from Arts, Commerce and BBA Section,Director of BBA,President and Vice president of Inner Wheel Club of Belagavi and over 150 students of RPD College  spiritedly participated in the Heritage Walk. It facilitated in creating awareness and sensitizing the public about the built heritage of Belagaum city.
