A brief report of the activity: A one day workshop on ‘Understanding Literature and Language’ for the Optional English students was conducted by the Department of English on 31st Jan 2017. More than fifty students of optional English (54 students) attended the workshop and took active part. The resource person was Dr.S.B.Biradar from SVM College, Ilkal. He focused on the approaches to read literature. This was done in a practical manner. In the 1st session students were shown how to ‘read’ the poem to understand it. Dr. Biradar discussed the poem ‘Daffodils’ by William Wordsworth through learner centric method. Copies of another poem ‘The Cuckoo’ by Wordsworth was given as a practical exercise. In the 2nd session discussion of the students response was taken and guidelines to write an understanding of poem were discussed. In the 3rd session the resource person highlighted the importance of communication skills. Audio-video presentation of speech giving, interview was shown. Dr.S.B.Biradar gave away participation certificates to all the students.
